映画メモ 「リーマン・ブラザーズ 最後の４日間」

２００９年公開。

タイトルそのまんま、
リーマン・ブラザーズが倒産する？しない？瀬戸際の駆け引きを描いている映画。
尺は５０分なので、ドラマよりかも。
色々な立場の人が登場するので、事前知識があるほうが分かりやすい。
友人がアメリカ資本の金融会社で働いていたので、当時心配した記憶が。

まずはこんなモノローグから始まります。

"If you talk to 100 people, 102 will gonna tell you they hate bankers. But most people won't be able to tell why. Is it because we're privileged? It can't be. (中略）In general,
people resent those they perceive to be on top. That's how the French revolution happened. And in the end, perception can matter more than the truth."
（100人と話せば、102人が銀行員が嫌いというはずだ。でもほとんどの人は理由を言えないだろう。特権階級だから？まさか。（中略）人は上にいるものを嫌うものだ。だから革命戦争は起こった。結局、真実よりも人がどう思うかが重要なのだ。）

privilegeという単語はTOEICにもよく出てきて、
"We are privileged to have you here." （あなたをお迎え出来て光栄です）のように、イベントで登壇ゲストを紹介する時に使われます。

その後のモノローグ。

"But once you get to Wall Street, no matter how you got here, you give up your right to say you're a man of the people. Here, we are all the same, and we all went down together."
（でもどのような方法であれ、ウォール街の一員になったら大衆の味方は名乗れない。ここでは皆同じ穴のムジナで、落ちる時も一緒なのだ。）

金融のトップが集まり話し合いますが、このシーンで政府は資金援助をしない結論に至ることが分かってきます。

"What if... we can't agree on a solution?"（もし救済策がまとまらないと？）
"Then, we have to start anticipating what will happen when Lehman does go bankrupt, and contemplate how the rest of the world can contain the damage."（リーマン倒産の余波を予測して、いかに被害を抑制するか、策を練らないといけない。）

anticipate （予測する）もTOEICに良く出てきます。
containは「含む」という意味以外にも、「抑制する、抑え込む」という意味があり、コロナ関連のニュースで "contain the virus, contain the outbreak"と良く聞かれるようになりました。

They are propagating.（マスコミの数が増えています）
